I feel a lot of progress over the past few decades has been made by the crystallization of then-current practices into a more permanent form and/or institutions, in the name of efficiency.

Use of ML for decision making is a just a continuation of that tendency.

Ironically, this slows down future progress. Typical lack of longer-term thinking.

Efficiency and codification is the antithesis of flexibility and change.

I think when people see "AI" they think: Ongoing learning, flexibility, and reacting to knowledge that an adaptive system would have.

Instead, what they get is rigid system that is slow to change and is reflexive that is blind to detail and always gives the same response.

I think a good analogy is a comparison between the innate and adaptive immune systems.
